2nd short film

Second Short Slasher film (Frankie)

For my second Slasher film I have looked at shorter Slasher film which is named Frankie and is only 7 minutes long. The short film features a small boy named “Frankie” and two elderly people, who Frankie is doing some work for.

Throughout the short film a variety of different camera shots are used and one of the interesting ones is a high angled shot which shows the elderly women looking out of the window and the window is hazy and the use of the non-diegetic music which is creepy creates the atmosphere something is going to happen. One unusual thing that happens is through a conversation with the elderly women who feels that the boy should be called “Grandma” which is a weird thing to happen because you wouldn’t expect someone to be asked to be called that even though they are not related. Another camera shot which is repeated is the use of the low angled shot showing how the boy has a lower status to the older man.

The storyline that is used is unusual although very simple and consist of only one person being murdered by two elderly people who adopt him as their grandparents although are violent and aggressive towards him. An example of this is shown when the young boy is winding because he wants to go home and is then beaten to the floor by the a old man and his walking stick which is repetitively used as a object to hurt him. At the beginning of the film when the boy is first introduced high key lighting is shown to reflect how pure and innocent his character is whereas low key lighting is used with the old man and granddad to reflect their characters as someone who is creepy and this will make the audience unnerved by the dramatic using of lighting from one character to another. The old characters are first introduced as subdued characters who wouldn’t hurt anyone although after the boy is hit by the walking stick, which coincidently ends up being `knocked out` and this will make the audience feel nervous because they don’t know who `knocked` the young boy out and the audience will be surprised to find out it was him who did that.

A medium close up is used which moves into a establishing shot which shows the three of them sat in the living room and acting if everything is normal which I feel is unnerving for the character and make the atmosphere more unnerving because of how ordinary they are trying to be, although this is changed dramatically when he snaps and beats him to the floor.
The end of the film is creating a cliff hanger because no one has found his dead body and no one would suspect the old people of being killers which is unusual and makes them less unnoticeable because they don’t fit the ordinary convention of being a killer. One of the final shots showing a newspaper article of two missing children suggests that they may be the killers and this mean they can make another sequel. Overall I feel this film is a good example of a short Slasher film as it will make the audience would get all of the appropriate reactions from this film and would make the audience feel sympathise for small child as children this young are rarely used as the victims or the killers will not show their actual murder as this may cause outrage.

  1. Good analysis has been completed. Reference to the target audience would have been useful along with comments on themes.
