Female Results for Questionaire

Female Results

Question 2

What age group do you fall into?

I have separated my female age group results to see which females fall into each age category. From this I have asked a variety of people from different age groups to discover their opinion on Slasher films. I now need to find out if each group would consider watching Slasher films.

Question 3
Would you consider watching Slasher films?

From this question I wanted to find out which people from the age groups would consider watching a Slasher film. This question is helping me to determine who my target audience will be as the greater majority will want to watch Slasher films. The next question will help me to find out what the most popular Slasher films are, which will enable me to see what conventions I need to follow.

Question Four

From the list below, which would you consider your favourite?
Due to the broad range of ages that I are my target audience I am now trying to find out to see if there is any particular thing that stands out through all ages. From the chart I can see that Nightmare on Elm Street was popular throughout all the age ranges which means that I will have to look at why it is the favourite.

Question Five
Why is it your favourite?

15-20years old
From looking at the results the most popular choice was Nightmare on Elm Street, some of the reasons they said this was their favourite was “by using the dream state within the film, I thought this was an unusual aspect and it would make me watch a film similar to it”. I also found out that one of the people I asked likes “a lot of gore” due to the variety of killings. I will use this information within my Slasher film to provoke a reaction from the audience.

21-25 years old

The results for this question have shown me that there is a varied result and I got a variety of results. An example of what one person said was that “revealing the killer at the end of the film was appropriate” and that “having the set themed was effective and having the killer being a child worked well” and this is something that I think would work effectively within my own Slasher film.

26-30 years old

Most people thought that “nightmare on Elm Street was effective as the killer was never caught and this allows for another sequel” and this is something that I am going to use within my own Slasher film. They also told me that they “liked the invention of using ordinary objects as weapons for the hands” and I thought that this was unusual and is something that I think would work within my own idea.

Question Six

What would you like to see within Slasher films?

From these results I have found out that females wanted to see “flashbacks” used within the films they watched and from this I am going to use flashbacks within Slasher films.
Question Seven

What sort of narrative would you like?
From the female results I have found out that the majority of people from all of the age groups would like to see linear narrative used within the storyline. From this I have found out that both males and females would like a Linear style so I am going to use this style within my own film.
Question Eight

What would you like to see at the end of the film?
From these results asking what they would like at the end of the film I have found out that the females would like the killer to escape as this could lead to a sequel. Therefore this means that I will make the killer to escape.
Question Nine

If you could improve Slasher films how would you?
These results are to determine what could be my original aspect within my own Slasher film so I would use there options as background to my own investigations. With these results it will help me to add in a original aspect and for the females I found that making the killer unusual would add effect.
Question Ten

What main reaction would you get from a Slasher film?

My main reason for asking this question was to help me know what reaction that I am meant to get from my audience. The females results show me that they should feel sympathetic towards the characters within Slasher films although would feel some of the other emotions aswell.
Question Eleven

What original aspect would you like to see within a Slasher film?

15- 20 years old

Females said that they would like to “set the film in one locations as this could be harder although effective” and this is something that I thought would be effective for my own Slasher film although may be difficult to film. I have also found out that most of them would like the killer to be a “lady because they are normally seen to be the victims and aren’t very strong” which I liked the sound of and this is something that I want to achieve for my own Slasher film.

21-30years old

These people thought that “by using a unexpected killer e.g. a child would make the plot more convincing and shocking for the audience” and this is something that would be unexpected and would also work well. They also stated that they could use “more background on the victims” and this is something that I want to include within my own Slasher film. People also thought that by not actually “showing the killer dyeing would make the plot more convincing and sometimes more effective.

From my questionnaire analyses I have found out that my target audience is people aged between 15 and 30 years old. The males in the age bracket above 30 + even though asked the majority of them said they wouldn’t watch Slasher films which means that they wouldn’t have been my target audience for my Slasher film. From here I will now need to cut down the age ranges to try and discover my specific target audience and this will be done through my interview questions.

Questionaire Anyalsis

Questionnaire Analysis

Below shows my results for male and female results as I want to find who my target audience are. I have handed out fifty questionnaires to find out how many men and women like to watch Slasher films between the ages of 15 upwards.

Question One
What Gender are you?

From my questionnaire I will need to analyze all of the results to find out my main focus of who is my target audience for my Slasher film as this will help with the progress of my film. From these results I have handed out 26 questionnaires to men and 24 to females.

Male Results
Question Two
What age group do you fall into?

I have separated my male age group results to see which males fall into each age category. From this I have asked a variety of people from different age groups to discover their opinion on Slasher films. I now need to find out if each group would consider watching Slasher films
Question Three
Would you consider watching Slasher films?

Above shows my results for all males and whether they would watch Slasher films or not. From these results I have found out that between the ages of 15 and 35, the majority of the people asked said that they would consider watching Slasher films. I am now going to find out what Slasher films these people have heard of.
Question Four
From the list below, which would you consider your favourite?

This chart shows me that the most popular result from my target audience to be Psycho which means that I will need to ask why they like these films which will help me to determine any typical codes and conventions throughout the films which I can use in my own Slasher film?
Question Five
Why is it your favourite?

15- 20years old

From asking this question I had a range of different responses about why they like a specific film and certain aspects that they liked. I found out that people liked Nightmare on Elm Street because of the complex background behind the killer which allowed them to create their own story behind the killer and they also liked the way in which the killer killed his victims. Psycho was the most popular response from asking what their favourite film was and this meant I wanted to find out why it was the most popular film and they said that “by not seeing the killer it created suspense, which was effective” and this is something that is constantly referred to “the killer and their background” and from this I will need to focus on the background of the killer.

21-30years old

The most popular results within this category was Halloween and Psycho a they are both ‘older films’ and allowed the audience to become more involved with the film. “I feel Halloween is a good film as it allows me to be more involved, and revealing the killer at the end of the film makes it more interesting.” From these results it has also shown me that the killer is something that I need to concentrate on within making me own Slasher film, and maybe revealing the killer’s identity at the end would be something to consider.

31-35years old

This age group were varied within their results although their responses are still helpful. An example of what someone said is “By setting the film around a certain time of year such as Halloween it allows the viewers to become more connected to the film as this is when people often think of death etc.” This is another idea for my Slasher film.

Overall, from this question it has given me some ideas into what people remember about Slasher films which is something that I need to use in my Slasher film and from the information provided I found out that having background information about the killer and placing it around a certain time of year. For my own Slasher film I feel that the idea of having background information on the killer and revealing it at the end is something that I want to include.

Question Six

What would you like to see within Slasher films?
Above shows my results for what people would like to see within a Slasher film. My main reason for asking this question was to find out what I could use within my own Slasher film so I am looking at the greater majority to see what is the most popular. From this it shows that all of the age groups feel that “quick/short shots” should be used and this means I am going to use this within my own Slasher film to create the right atmosphere.
Question Seven

What sort of narrative would you like?
The most popular result for the narrative question is males would like a Linear narrative so its easier to follow and watch. From this information it means that I am going to use Linear narrative within my Slasher film?
Question Eight

What would you like to see at the end of the film?

From these results it has shown me that the results were more varied on what they wanted to happen at the end although most people wanted the killer to escape which is what the female wanted to happen at the end and this means I am going to use within my own Slasher film.

Question Nine
If you could improve Slasher films how would you?

From these results I have found out that males wanted more background on the characters esp. the killer which is different compared to the females which wanted the killer to be more unusual and I will use both of their options to make my Slasher film different and original.

Question Ten

What main reaction would you get from a Slasher film?

I have compared the results from the males to females and from the males I discovered that the majority of men would feel agitated by the film compared to women being sympathetic although I would need to try and get both reactions from my viewers.

Question Eleven

What original aspect would you like to see within a Slasher film?

15-20years old

The people aged 15-20 found it hard to tell me any original aspects that they thought could be used to make Slasher films more effective as they said “they have all been done before” although one person did say that they felt “use a mixtures of killers, not just one” which is something that would be effective although hard to do within the 10 minute slot to make my own Slasher film.

21-30 years old

This age group said that they felt “old and more effective Slasher films were more effective e.g. Psycho because even though it wasn’t so gruesome it still created a mixture of emotions” which I feel would work well within the 10 minute slot and this is something that I would want to use within the film to try and create all of the emotions. Another comment was that “use a unusual area such as a bus” which would be effective although not conceivable in the 10 minute slot.

31-35 years old

This age group has shown me that they wanted a variety of different things such as they should use "a different weapon" to murder people with although they didnt know what they could use to make it orginal aswell as effective. They also thought that I could film it in a different location such as setting in a place like maybe in a "old peoples home" would be effective. From this information I thought setting it somehwere different would be effective although I feel it will be to diffcult to film in a "old peoples home" due to my time limit.

Poster for my film

Above shows my poster for my final idea which is advertising my local film event which could be viewed within Startford upon Avon College for free to promote the course and my own 10 minute Slasher film. My reason for including the information about the title head line "The one you will never suspect" summerise the film. I gathered both the book and the background (of the park) from the links below. I decided to use these areas as I thought they would be the most effective pictures and suited the genre well and they were better quaility than other pictures I found.
It could also be placed within the local newspaper to advertise the event and I have found how much it would cost to place this poster in the Startford Herald and below shows this piece of information.

Poster Analysis

Poster Analysis

This is the poster for one of the films I analysed “When a Stranger Calls” remade in 2006. The poster is placed on a black background and has a negative connotation as it creates the impression of death and emptiness which is the atmosphere associated with Slasher films. A hand is also used and is placed in the centre of the poster. The hand creates the impression that it is reaching into the poster which makes it more personal for the audience. By the hand holding on to the phone it also indicates that they could be calling out for safety whereas they are not safe within the situation and this will make the audience feel uneasy by the poster.

The name of a title is always crucial for attracting the audience to watch or buy a product as it is normally one of the first things that people will notice when looking at a poster. The colour of the writing is red and is a reoccurring colour used within Slasher films as red represents both blood and death which is a negative connation. On the phone there is also a picture of a young women who is screaming which allows the audience to have a emotional connection with the young girl because it is obvious harm is being done to her.

Overall from looking at this poster it has given me some ideas on how I would distribute my own Slasher film and using things such as the dark background and a striking picture which allows the audience to read into the film.

Flowchart of final idea

Flowchart of Final Idea

Agnes is sat at home flicking through a photo album showing the herself with many small children and also shows a close-up showing the death date of each child and the dates are close together.

She is then shown sat in the park at the same time (3 oclock in the afternoon; when school finishes) with the same notebook writing notes. She is shown also taking a photo of the child whilst sitting in the park.

Subtitles show how the days pass. There are children playing in the park and a mother with 3 small children who two of them are being naughty and she doesn’t notice one of them leaving the park through the gate.

Agnes is then seen leaving the park following the young child. She hurries past the child and opens the car door lifting the child and putting him in closing the door. The child’s face is seen looking out of the window crying.

The small boy is then seen curled up in a darkened room showing a small cup with a droplet of water in it. The small boy is shown with blood coming from his face. Agnes then enters and sits opposite the child staring at him and sits an eats a piece of cake whilst he is watching her eating it. She then stands and leaves the room.

The subtitles show how the days pass and show snippets of him being hit and beaten which shows the progression of the violence.

The first day she walks into the room which she is in silently and closes the door behind her where a yelp is heard coming from the little boy.

The next incident happens later in the day when the boy is huddled in the room against the wall. As the woman enters the room (silently) and gets closer to the boy all we can hear is the scream of the boy. As the woman exits the room she has blood on her hands and the boy has a trickle of blood coming from his nose.

Later on in the evening the woman is holding the journal in her hand against her stomach and is sat wihin the room andf begins to write within the journal. The woman begins to write what has happened throughout the day. Whilst the woman is writing within the journal the room is shown and it is covered in childrens objects such as clothes and other things. There is shouting in the background.

The subtitle shows the final day (on which he dies). The woman begins writing in her journal while watching children playing outside. She sicks the photo in the journal of the small boy and as she leaves the room a loud banging is heard.

Later on within the day the woman is in the kitchen and is preparing the things that she could use to kill him with such as, a variety of different knifes and a cloth to gag him with.

As she enters the room the boy is tried up on the floor and is blindfolded the woman Agnes comes in holding a knife the boy is wining she walks behind him in complete silence and stabs the young boy. The boy falls to the floor and she removes his shoes and leaves the room closing the door. As she leaves the room she rushes to the kitchen where she washes the knife before placing it back into the stand.

The woman is sat inside kictThe final shot shows a variety of shoes lined up along the door and she goes and she places the young boys pair of shoes on the floor next to all of the other pairs of shoes.

Target Audience Justifcation

Target Audience Justification

My target audience needs to be justified to show that I have researched who my target audience will be for my Slasher film so that I am making sure I am advertising my own Slasher film for the right audience.

The first thing I did when watching the films was to look at the age certificates of them which would give me a idea of the age bracket I would be looking at advertise for. From the information I have found all of the films I watched were 15+ which shows me that my target audience wont be below 15, although this is already known because I am making a Slasher film which is advertised for older people. From watching the films there wont any younger characters under the age of 15 used as central protagonists which shows me that my central protagonist is unlikely to be 15 years or younger although it could be seen to be a original element using a child as a victim as it is not expected and is often more shocking for the audience. After looking at the age certificate I then had to produce my questionnaires which was meant to shorten my target audience to see which age group most watched Slasher films and therefore would be my age range. The reason for doing this is that it is to vast to try and make a Slasher film which would fit everyone’s specifications due the age range. From my questionnaires I discovered that my target audience was people aged 15-30 years old and this resulted in me then asking my focus group to see if I could discover something that would fit everyone. The focus group meant I had to propose three ideas which included original elements and ask them about my three ideas to see what they preferred to see as a film although they thought that by using adjusting this idea it would make it more orginal and effective. anted more depth to the victim and the killer which would be achieved by more background. They also told me what they wanted something more orginal and they were worried that usinh children could be a problem so I came up with the idea to fit both reasons by using no dialogue. From this result I found out that they wanted idea three which involved children which is unusual to see although due to the cliff-hanger at the end which leaves the audience feeling surprised and this has given me my final idea.

Hypothetical Distribution Plan

Hypothetical Distribution
For a hypothetical distribution plan there is several things that I could do which would allow my film to be marketed in different ways although with the budget that I currently have there is only a certain amount of things that I am able to do.

Viral marketing is a successful way to market your film as the majority of people use the internet and for my target audience 18-30 years old this is expected. A successful use of viral marketing is with dark knight where they did viral marketing months before the film was released due to their pre-determined audience. This is a positive thing because from having the pre determined audience it allows them to follow certain characters from the film and this is shown with people following the Joker and other people following Mayor of the film as they are both contrasting characters. Below shows a website that was used to follow the Joker and the mayor and also includes facts about him that would interest fans of theirs.

I thought this site was interesting as it is providing the viewers with a variety of links which leads to other sites showing how the Joker has defaced them and also shows his disregard for society and the people whom live in the city which is something that will appeal to this audience as it will show how he wanting his pre determined audience to react from seeing his. The source below is showing one of the links that if you clicked on you would received which is showing how what the Joker has done which would create a reaction from the audience.

One of the most popular ways to distribute a film is by using a trailer which reveals snippets about the film and allows the audience to know what is going to happen within the film although will leave them asking questions which is what a trailers main aim is for. Depending on the film it can be shocking and may allow the audience to ask questions about some of the characters, which is something that should be done within a Slasher film. Within the trailer fast cutting of the editing is used to create the impression of speed which is the right atmosphere for the film as it is a action film. Furthermore, by using the variation of different camera shot such as high angle shots and close up shows how diverse the action could be. Another way which will make people want to go to the cinema to watch it is by a star doing a junkett (interviews with a star) which will help people to know more information about both the real and reel star which is something people want to know aswell as information on the film. The star will also give a interview on the film which is something that will draw the audience into the film and will allow them to watch it.
Word of the mouth is also something that allows people to watch the film as people are likely to watch a film if it has critical acclaim or if someone they know has said that it is worth watching and this is something that encourage people to watch the film. This is also free and doesn’t cost anything and this could also be done within a real distribution plan although this is normally done once a film has been previewed at the cinema.

Another way to promote films is by using posters to promote both real and hypothetical films. A industry has a better benifit because they already have several other ways to promote a high budget film although a poster can be benificial as it is another source to attract people to watch the film. Below shows an example for the film Dark Knight which is a high concept movie. This poster has a slogan "welcome to a world without rules" which will encourge people to watch the film. The contrast between the dark and bright colours also attract peoples attention. By having the superhero "Batman" in dark clothing also gives him a edge which will attact people even if they havent watched the pervious films.

Overall, a hypothetical distribution can be just as effective as real distribution as some of the things for distribution are used within both of my plan.

Real Distribution

Real Distribution

The real distribution is to help me establish what things I am going to use within my own film that I am making. The types of things of advertising I will need to look at ranges from contacting the local radio to attending small festivals to advertise the film.

One of ways in which I can publicize the event is by advertising the event on the local radio and can be done by asking either Touch Fm (Stratford upon Avon) or Banbury Sound (Banbury) and ask them to announce that there will be a show in both local towns to promote and advertise my own Slasher film and other peoples as well. This idea is accessible as it is affordable and will allow me to raise money from people watching the film which will also cover costs by asking them. It would also be possible to ask the radio station if I could get a interview with them which will also help publicize my event with them which will also allow me to state my reasons for wanting to create the film. It would be possible for me to also have a free viewing for my film possibly at college to allow word of mouth to spread around college which would promote people to watch the film.

Another source that I could look at and would allow me to publicize my event in a variety of places could be by presenting it at small festivals such as the Edinburgh fringe and the virgin short film festival which main objective is to promote young and ambitious film makers. One of the reasons for Virgin sponsoring this film festival is that they will “work with the Uk Film Council and Virgin Media to shoot their next film” and this is something that will encourage and inspire film makers. Another of the reasons is that “12 films will be shown on 214 cinemas across the UK” which will promote inspiring actors. Furthermore, it is often occurs that film critics amongst other people will also attend the viewing of the films at the festivals. For the winner of the film one person will take away “£30,000” which will allow them to continue on with their dreams with creating films. The Edinburgh Fringe Film Festival takes place every year in August which is attended by a range of different critics from around the world and this will encourage new film makers to take their place within the film world.

Another possible way of promoting the film is by creating posters to advertise a local film viewing that you are having for free so that you can gather critical feedback from your target audience as well as other people as it is interesting to hear other people’s opinions on your own film and in my case making a Slasher film will normally only appeal to a certain age range although it would be interesting to hear their opinion as well as my target audience which is people aged 18-30 years old. On the poster I will have to include a snippet of something that is related to my film such as a still shot of a killer or the victim which will create a vibe before my film is viewed.

It may also be possible to post my work on social networking sites such as myspace or facebook which will allow a variety of people to browse my film which is a positive as it doesn’t restrict being only be able to watch it once at a film viewing. This idea would also not cost me a vast amount of money and would be accessible to do as vast amounts of people use both facebook and myspace. Facebook is also useful as it allows me to select people from my target audience to watch the Slasher film which I have made and this means I would get certain feedback which I will defiantly be able to use as critical feedback.

Overall there is a variety of things that I can do which will advertise and distribute my Slasher film which is affordable and accessible.
